Sente Urges Residents to Take Advantage of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

09/21/2015

VERNON HILLS, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is encouraging community members to safely dispose of old prescription medications at two convenient local drop-off locations as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

“It is not uncommon for families to have unused or expired prescription drugs in their medicine cabinets, but proper disposal of these unwanted medications can often prove challenging,” Sente said. “As a result, these potentially dangerous substances are too often left in locations where curious children or adolescents can access them.”

Sente is urging local residents to bring leftover medications to the Mundelein Police Department at 221 N. Lake Street in Mundelein or the Vernon Hills Police Department at 754 Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills on Saturday Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The collection drives are being held as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) intended to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for medication abuse and addiction. A full list of collection sites can be found at dea.gov or by calling 800-882-9539.

Earlier this month, Sente voted to enact the Heroin Crisis Act aimed at addressing drug abuse and addiction through a combination of drug-take back initiatives, treatment programs and drug courts. Under the measure, first responders would also be required to carry an opiate antidote, which could reverse the effects of an overdose in an emergency.

“The opioid abuse epidemic that is sweeping the country is a public health issue that requires everyone’s attention,” Sente said. “We need to work together to not only respond to instances of abuse and addiction, but also put the necessary prevention mechanisms in place to foster stronger drug-free communities.”
